A Cornwall-based hen welfare charity is appealing to the public to find homes for hundreds of ex-battery hens.

St Austell Fresh Start for Hens is holding one of its rehoming events for ex-commercial hens in St Austell on Saturday, November 27, and is appealing to anyone who can give them a free-range retirement to come forward.

It is often the case that the hens have been living in cages laying eggs to be sold in supermarkets or put into processed foods but, once they reach 18 months old, they are classed as end of lay at which point they are sent to slaughter.

But the fate of the hens being sent to slaughter is often changed when charities step in to rehome them.

Fresh Start for Hens is one of those, re-homing the ex-commercial hens into loving homes all over the country to live out the rest of their natural lives.

Posting to Facebook it said: "We have hundreds of lovely little hens still looking for happy retirement homes on 27th November.

"If you have room in your coops please email [email protected] or register on our main website www.freshstartforhens.co.uk.

"If you don’t have room please just share this post to help us spread the re-homing word far and wide.

"Thank you in advance."
