Calls for disposable barbeques to be banned have been reignited after a fire destroyed an emergency phone line at a Cornish beach. The fire is believed to have been caused by a disposable barbeque being placed inside a bin before it had fully cooled down.
The phone line at Perranuthnoe was crucial due to poor phone signal in the area, and its destruction is said to have the potential to put lives at risk. Disposable barbecues and outdoor fires can easily get out of control, also posing a risk to wildlife and the environment if it escalates into a wildfire.
The banning of disposable barbecues was considered by the Government back in April of 2022, but as of yet there is no blanket ban in place. Some major supermarkets have stopped selling them but they are still available for purchase at most major retailers.
Keep Britain Tidy are leading in the calls for the ban, over concerns for safety as well as the environmental impact disposable barbecues can have.
