An exciting new facility, that includes a skatepark, parkour area and youth hub, is set to open where north Cornwall's Old Cattle Market once sat.

The project, created by Freestyle Skateparks, includes the construction of what is believed to be North Cornwall’s first and only pump track and parkour area. There will also be a community café/youth hub, outside gym bars, a table tennis table and an extension to the existing skatepark that was built in September 2018.

Camelford Town Council has planned a grand opening of Phase 2 of the Old Cattle Market Regeneration Project for Saturday, March 5 in conjunction with its St Piran’s Day celebrations and is inviting the public along to see the area for themselves.

How the skatepark and cafe area is set to look

The project was made possible by £125k funding from the National Lottery Community Fund. This includes £10,000 for a youth worker, £50k funding from Sport England, £25k funding from Saputo Dairy UK (formerly Dairy Crest) and £16k seed/match funding from Camelford Town Council (CTC).

This exciting project has involved the local community from the start of planning in January 2018, with various consultations and design meetings, ensuring that the community’s needs are at the heart of the project.

The council hopes that this new Camelford facility will not only provide a safe place for our young people to meet, relax, exercise and learn new skills, but also attract footfall into the town that has suffered greatly from the pandemic.

Its long-term vision is to provide youth worker-led coaching in various disciplines (skateboarding, scooter, BMX, breakdancing) and include multi-generational integration through a repair café.

The grand opening has also been supported by the European Development Funds "Welcome Back Fund”, in association with Cornwall Council and Hall for Cornwall.

This has meant a fun-filled timetable of events, starting at 11am, has been made possible with help from several local businesses.

The Urban Playground Team will be showcasing its “Zoo Humans” show and parkour workshop, Plymouth legend DJ “Steve Fudge” will be doing a DJ set and workshop, plus Lennox Pearce providing breakdancing demos and a workshop.

There will also be live music with Gary McCausland and a 40ft inflatable assault course for all to enjoy. Cornish Crepes and Hells Kitchen will be on hand to provide delicious food and drink at the event.

There will be a chance to enter into an amazing raffle with prizes donated from Mermadium, Skate Warehouse, Air Culture and Mount Hawke Skatepark.

There will also be other activities in the town with a pasty-making workshop in the Old Bank at 10am, followed by a competition for the best pasty and saffron bun. There will also be Folk band Annown playing in the Bandstand at 1pm, and a fastest pasty eating competition at 8pm supported by the Masons Arms Pub, just before the Trelawney Shout at 9pm.

Proceeds will go to St Petrocs, the Mayor’s nominated charity for 2021-22.
